Video: Château de Saint-Fargeau

Château St-Fargeau, one of the many elegant residential châteaux in this region, has a history that spans ten centuries. Its origins go back to 980, when the bishop of Auxerre built it as a fortified hunting lodge. In 1453, the present pentagonal castle was built over the base of the original fortress. The six huge towers were built between the 15th and 17th century. The Lepeletier family acquired it in 1715 and kept it until 1968. During the summer, historic spectacles involving more than 600 actors and 50 mounted knights retrace the life of the castle and the region. The château also contains a working Renaissance farm complete with animals, tools and machinery of the age.
